Museum of Yellow Corbina
It exhibits scenes and manners of yellow corbina fishing as well as the history of Yeonpyeong-do. It is designed to be an education center for children. The foldingscreen like rocks at the northwest side and exquisite stones around the Ongdol beach form great scenery along with sunsets on the northern sky, which may give nostalgia to the uprooted people. From here, you can overlook a place where encounter with North Korean military happened on June 15, 1999.
Yeonpyeong-do rite for an abundant catch
‘General, please help ships to return full of fishes.’
Every year, prior to the first full moon of the new lunar year, a rite for an abundant harvest is held in Yeonpyeong-do famous for Yellow Corbina Pasi (a fish market on the sea during the peak fishing season). Yeonpyeong-do rite for an abundant catch started when General Gyeong-up Lim caught yellow corbinas with a thronged tree branch from the front sea of Yeonpyeong-do on his way to Shandong, China, to conquer the Ching Dynasty during the reign of Injo, Chosun Dynasty s 16th King. The ride is performed at Chungmin shrine, the ancestral shrine of General Lim.
Thirteen flags representing 13 major fish that are caught well around Yeonpyeong-do including yellow corbinas, blue crabs and trepangs will be hoisted at the entrance to the village from the dock during the rite. With the wave of General flag showing General Lim and flowery five-color flags, traditional musical band will start playing its music and “Yeonshin-gut (shamanistic ritual for Dragon King)” will be held on a ship.
Shamans will pray for safety and an abundant catch on behalf of fishermen. There is a Yellow Corbina History Center that sheds new lights on the history of Yeonpyeong-do that boasts the history of Korea’s largest “Yellow Fish Pasi” and serves also as a pavilion.
