Island of Birds,Shin-do
Island of Birds,Shin-do
About 20km away from Jangbong-do through the sea route of the Yellow Sea, a small rocky island exists. Unmanned lighthouse flickers sometimes, except that you cannot find any human trace. The island is guarded by thousands of black-tail gulls and hundreds of egretta europhotes Chinese egrets. The 5,950 square meters of unmanned island is as high as 40 meter above the sea. During the peak-mating season in June and July, this small island is covered with gray black-tail gulls, and dotted with egretta europhotes Chinese egrets with white wings. Their color combination is quite a view.

In 1988, the island as habitat for blacktailed gulls and egretta europhotes Chinese egrets was designated as a natural monument #360, and egretta europhotes Chinese egrets are designated as natural monument #316. Siwnhoe、s egrets are such rare birds that only about 2,000 of them live on the world. Remarkably, over 900 of those birds live in Shindo whose preservation value as the world-biggest habitat is well recognized.
